What Is the Target Dress Challenge? It Involves a Prairie Frock - Distractify Posted: 09 Feb 2021 03:10 PM PST While the clothing section at Target often has trendy pieces at fairly affordable prices, sometimes the selections fall flat. In the throes of the pandemic, many people began to have fun with one particular Target offering: a dress that many said looked like it came straight out of Little House on the Prairie. If you've perused Facebook and you've noticed #TargetDressChallenge, then you've likely seen photo after photo of users wearing these "prairie dresses." Some have simply taken photos in open fields or farmland, while others have accompanied their pictures with captions about life on the frontier. One woman in particular named Lesley Butterfield, who is based in Virginia, went viral for her elaborate take on the Target Dress Challenge. The Target Dress Challenge has become a pandemic favorite. Many are living in sweatpants, loungewear, and anything else with an elastic waistband during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the dress challenge has given a lot of people something to get dressed up for. It's unclear when exactly the challenge began, or who started it. Since someone initially pointed out the dress's resemblance to someone from frontier times, people have been buying it in droves from Target. The challenge has been going on for several months, but it truly went viral after Lesley Butterfield's post on Jan. 30. She shared a photoshoot of her wearing the infamous Target dress in brown. In several of the photos, Lesley is holding a farming tool, and in another, she's collecting eggs. The pictures went viral, and Lesley has continued to remain in on the fun by sharing insight into the photoshoot and her inspiration. "I saw the dress challenge online and thought it was a hoot..." she told Fox News. "Little did I expect to snag the dress at Target on clearance a few days later when I was picking up milk and bread! I decided to give it a shot because I think we all can appreciate comic relief during these times." ![]() Article continues below advertisement Lesley further went into character by writing a pretend diary entry from the perspective of her prairie age alter ego. "Since Target has decided we all need a dress as ugly as homemade sin while we suffer amidst the pandemic, I reckon I would join this movement with the rest of the women, down home on the range," she began in the caption of her Facebook post. "Journal entry, Day 332 of Pandemic: 'The Pony Express finally arrived into town today, delivering much need letters of encouragement from family and friends alike and alarming news of civil discord. I was so surprised that I nearly burnt the rhubarb cobbler simmering in the dutch oven," she continued. Article continues below advertisement "After I churned my own butter, I sold off our fine china made of porcelain, no need for that nonsense anymore under a 10-month long quarantine. I was able to barter for a new cutlery knife from the local general store since my old one was so dull it wouldn't cut hot butter," Lesley wrote. "After daily chores and 5 minutes of homeschool, the girls made corn husk dolls and the boys dipped candles for our lanterns.'" Article continues below advertisement After her initial post went viral online (and caused #TargetDressChallenge to trend on Facebook), Lesley joked about selling the look with her pose. "FYI: I have named this the Pioneer Power Pose," she wrote in a comment. "It tends to work best with a post hole digger and shaved legs." |
The Real Reason Princess Diana Had Two Wedding Dresses - The List Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:11 AM PST ![]() The second dress was a sort of insurance policy the designers wanted to have in place not just in the event of disaster befalling the first dress, but also in case the design of the gown was leaked to the press. "At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise," Elizabeth told People. "Had the secret of the real dress got out it's possible that Diana would actually have worn this one." She explained that the second dress was not made at the soon-to-be royal's request, though, and that they "didn't try it on Diana." Instead, the dress was for the designers' "peace of mind." Designing Princess Diana's wedding dress was a massive break for the Emanuels, who were only in their 20s at the time. It makes sense that they wanted all of their bases covered for such a huge moment not just in royal history but in their careers. Elizabeth told the Daily Mail that the backup dress was similar to the one that Princess Diana ended up wearing on her big day, although it was a bit simpler. "It was only three-quarters finished — we simply didn't have time to make it in its entirety, so none of the embroidery or finishing touches were done," she said. |

The Best Little Black Dresses - The New York Times Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:06 PM PST ![]() Notable competitorsWe liked the high-quality cashmere of Everlane's The Cashmere Turtleneck Dress—it hardly pilled and didn't stretch out. The dress also had clean, tight seams that didn't fray, as well as a comfy, loose turtleneck. But we ultimately thought the Naadam's midi hem and dual skirt slits were more stylish. We thought this dress' cashmere was also of a higher quality. The Joie Leonore Silk Dress drapes nicely on the body, but the silk was of far lower quality than our Equipment Essential Silk Dress pick. We liked the matching self-tie belt that allowed our testers to hide their tummies while accentuating their hips. But the cut was a little too long and narrow for half of our panelists, and they didn't find it flattering. It also comes in a narrower range of sizes than the Equipment dress. CasualThe fit of the ASOS Design Tiered Smock Dress wasn't true to size, and it reminded us of maternity wear. Also, the stitching came undone after one wash. Our panelists were divided on the ASOS Design Midi Smock Dress with Wrap Top (petite, regular, plus); some loved the fit for hugging their curves, but others found it unflattering. The ASOS Design Padded Shoulder Sleeveless Mini T-shirt Dress (petite, regular, plus) was too juvenile for our tastes. We thought the ASOS Design Tall Soft Denim Tea Dress was also too juvenile, and the fit wasn't true to size. The COS Knitted A-Line Merino Wool Dress made our testers look frumpy and shapeless, like they were wearing knitted trash bags. And it felt itchy. The DB MOON Women Summer Casual Short Sleeve Dress is an inexpensive option from Amazon, but the mediocre quality couldn't compare to our picks. None of our panelists liked the style or fit of the Universal Standard Geneva Dress, the Universal Standard Helen Liquid Jersey Shift Dress, or the Universal Standard Sonya Satin V Neck Dress. Testers thought they weren't flattering and that the fabric was too thin for comfort (or, in the satin option, too thick). The Universal Standard Misa Dress is definitely a contender that looks better in person than online. Our panelists liked its simplicity but thought there was nothing particularly special about it. And the self-tie strap reminded them of the '90s grunge-sweatshirt-tied-around-the-waist look. ProfessionalThe 100% viscose A.P.C. Oleson dress was too heavy when worn, and it looked shapeless on most of our testers. The Artizia Babaton Slit Wrap Dress looks killer online, but the fit was all wrong for those testers who normally wear XS, M, and L. (It wasn't sold in sizes large enough for our size XL panelist.) It's also missing a built-in slip, so you're left completely exposed if the self-tie strap comes undone. The Banana Republic Sweater Dress is well made, but the relaxed fit wasn't as flattering as the fitted Universal Standard Rita Ribbed Sweater Dress With Pockets. The Black Label by Evan-Picone Sleeveless Fit & Flare Dress is a simple-looking business-casual dress that didn't stand out compared with the better-quality J.Crew Résumé Dress. The COS Drawstring Mulberry Silk Dress featured a thick, textured cotton front with a silk back skirt—a combination that our testers hated. The silk quality was also poor—almost raw or scratchy—and wrinkled too easily for a piece you'd be sitting on throughout the day. "I feel like this is something a woman would wear while mourning their husband during the Civil War. Hard pass," said one panelist about the COS Organic Cotton Collarless Shirt Dress. The neckline on the COS Sleeveless Cowl Neck Dress was uncomfortably high, and the dress' overall fit wasn't flattering. Our testers said this little black dress reminded them of a bathrobe. One panelist loved the thick material of the French Connection Lula Long Sleeve Tulip Dress and how it hugged her curves, but our remaining panelists weren't fans of the style. The J.Crew Long-sleeve Everyday Cashmere Crewneck Dress is another sweater dress we considered, but the cashmere quality was lacking compared with that of the Naadam dress, and it felt slippery to the touch. The Uniqlo Women 3D Knit Lambswool-Blend Balloon Long-Sleeve Dress was itchy, and the balloon sleeves felt too trendy to be a staple piece for years to come. Date nightThe ASOS Sweetheart Neck Midi Dress with Ruched Wrap Skirt was ill fitting because the bust and waist were too loose (even when sized down), making this dress, which is supposed to accentuate your curves, feel like a dowdy robe. The stitching quality was subpar on the B Collection by Bobeau Mathilde Smocked Flutter-Sleeve Dress, and the fit wasn't true to size. It felt more like a witch costume than a date-night gown. The scoop neck on Everlane's The Japanese GoWeave Cross-Back Slip Dress was too low and wide, leaving us exposed. The Madewell Ruffle-Front Cross-Back Midi Dress was nice, but it wasn't outstanding compared with the A.L.C. dress we recommend. And the polyester material was so thin that we worried it would tear with the slightest snag. Even our panelist who hates spaghetti-strap dresses liked the Reformation Astrid dress, but it wrinkled immediately. |
