Thankfully he wasn't gone for too long. Solomon Ray, formerly known as simply Solomon, returns to the music scene after a five-month absence with what seems to be a new, mature sound... and it's definitely working for this music blogger already.
Following the release of his
Le Garcon EP in February 2014, a project that ranked as my seventh favorite release of the year, and featured incredible tracks such as "Swim No More" and "3 Dolla Bill", the independent artist decided to take a break from the recording studio shortly after premiering the music video for his "
Crash Into You" single back in September. Such a shame.
However, Solomon Ray is back with more focus, and instead of sharing new original material from his official debut album just yet, the artist has decided to give his fans his unique cover of Beck's 2002 hit "
Guess I'm Doing Fine", a guitar-driven, emotional performance that Solomon Ray definitely nails in terms of sentiment and feeling.
The new release is pretty much a straightforward cover of Beck's ballad. Solomon Ray allows his vocals shine at the forefront of simple production and heartbreaking songwriting. "
Yellow roses in the graveyard, got no time to watch them grow," the artist somberly sings as he appears to be reminiscing on a previous relationship. The only new addition to the cover is a self-written spoken word verse towards the end of the track where the artist speaks of his absence, the industry and his own life.
"
Guess I'm Doing Fine" sounds to be a natural, effortless fit for Solomon Ray, the spoken word portion is a nice addition that allows listeners to hear what the artist was going through over the last few months. Hopefully he has overcome his troubles because the vocal performance is strong, the feeling he brings to the cover is on point and it's a promising reintroduction to a talented artist.
By the way, did I mention the new track is available as a
free download? Yeah, so go get yourself a copy. You won't be disappointed. Job well done Solomon Ray!
