So I recently read a thing about dying your hair mad colors and it made me mad! So much bullshit! I've been dying my hair messed up colors since I was 14 and here is my honest list of honestly everything I can think of to think of before you dye that hair.
1 - Your colors will change.
Hair dye fades over time. This is the reason I do a tip test. I choose a new color and only dye my tips in a dip dye effect. If all else fails then I can cut the tips off if the color looks awful and I know not to do my entire head of hair. Case in point - I recently dyed my hair neon green. I mean neon. It is now aqua blue. Faded aqua blue. Test first and decided if you like the fade before you color the whole thing. I promise you - it will make a world of difference. If not, I would be working a whole head of faded blue right now.
2- It will change how things look.
I dyed my hair purple and I noticed my skin looked yellow. I have naturally yellow skin anyway because thats just how I roll but this was awful. I switched to a warmer foundation and it made a huge difference. I've also not been able to wear red lipsticks with pink hair or red with green hair. So knowing what clashes acceptably or clashes horribly will also go in your favour.
3 - Your shower will become a war zone.
Hair dye stains everything it touches. However, neon colors will come out in the wash like crazy. This is even worse if you have sections of insane color and then bleached hair because it will actually need to be washed in sections to avoid bleeding. This means you'll never grab a five second shower ever again. It also means bathing in lavender or blue water for a while. I used to shower, then wash down the shower after because it was covered. The same goes for making sure that you clean the room or put down towels before you dye. Deposits do not come back with Directions in the carpet.
4 - Alternative hair shops are your best friend.
By alternative I mean, non chain shops like Boots. This is where you will find not just the more alternative colors but the best deals. I am talking about Directions dye two for five pounds which if your hair is almost waist length like mine - makes a massive difference. I am now edging into three pots a go now. Sucks but meh.....The expense of doing salon for this kinda dye is mental. It needs to be redone so often that you might as well get a mate, get some wine and make a night of it. There is little to go wrong with Stargazer that cannot be fixed by two people at 1.30am with enough will power.
5 - Bleach that hair first.
If you do not bleach your hair then the color is going to take into account what color your hair was before. Which, if you hair was dark then the color is going to be dark. Simple. I use Schwarzkopf XXL bleach which is in Boots for about £5 a go. It has never failed me. I have been bleaching for about 10 years now. A lot time - the way around loosing your hair through bleaching is to just do the roots and also - invest in conditioner - I do not bleach the tips ever - just the roots. This means you'll keep your hair longer and in better condition.
6 - Understand product.
I keep my hair in good condition because I know when to add stuff to it. I also know that straightening and being a dick to it means it could fall out. So I add an overnight mask and sleep in it from time to time, I use different conditioners, I add oil if its dry.....The best mask I have found is by Bleach London and it's their recreation mask in a silver tube. Awesome stuff. Sleep in it. I do. I also spray a leave in conditioner by Aussie during the day as well and use MAC Careblend oil into the hair during the day (not the actual intended use of the product but an accidental wonder find!) I do not brush, straighten, curl or over product my hair. I never use wax, hairspray or anything like it.
7 - Some dyes will transfer.
I would say that nearly all blues I have worn will at some point leave a mark on something! I hate blue though so I'm biased. I have found dye on t-shirts, towels, bedding, cars, pillows......it really does transfer. Especially a fresh home dye where the dye may not have washed out entirely the first time. I love it fresh but my god trying to keep it from destroying my bed is another story.
8 - Rain is not your friend.
Again with the transfer. Get an umbrella. Don't do what I did. New Years eve 2012 - fresh blue dyed fringe and out the door. The rain started the minute I got on the bus and didn't stop until I got into town. I dashed from bus to pub and got drowned. I spent the next 20 minutes under the hand dryer and wiping blue dye off my forehead. great.
9 - Go unusual
I get so bored of seeing the same colors over and over again. Branch out! I decided that neon green wasn't for me after going neon green. I loved it while it was fresh but its been a nightmare to get rid of. Blue was the same story. However one of the dye jobs I got the most compliments on was a purple and pink mix job that my hairdresser did. It was unusual and really pretty. I am working the courage to go grey soon and I have seen some yellow, green and dark green combos that I like. If you are dying your hair to look different then don't be afraid to look different. Do it. I like trawling through pinterest to get ideas for my hair that are different and a little bit unusual. I am so bored of seeing people with faded out red!
10 - Head and Shoulders is not your friend.
Desperately seeking gorgeous hair. I did a bad thing. I covered up the remains of my last attempt at blue with a bold red statement do. I chose the color wisely and decided to go for it. I had to, I was going to New York and didn't want photos of me with terrible hair to haunt me. I, at the time, had blue and blonde bits. I was gutted. So I ended up with super hero hair in bright neon red. I was delighted. I got to New York and lost my shampoo. I had to borrow one and fast and the only thing that one of the lads had was, head and shoulders. EW. I knew what it was going to do.
Two days later I had gone down to a pink. In fact, the first night out I did in New York - my hair is pink. Gutted. 10 days later as I was back in Nottingham - I had pastel pink hair. Again, gutted. It got worse - it faded to a pink and blue combo that was really bizarre but there was nothing I could do bar change and dye over it - again. No way. I gave up. I let it fade out and cursed H+S which is known for stripping your hair.
Although there are many products that do this - h&S is the fastest one I have ever come across. I swear to god.
Now.
These are my truths. Go forth and dye if you still fancy it. Oh and if your in Nottingham - the alternative hair and wig shop on Upper Parliament Street by the Stage door bar has the best offer on hair dye. Go Directions - it lasts longer
