In between the synth-pop stylings of third studio album The Original High in 2015 and now, glam rocker Adam Lambert has kept busy touring the world fronting legendary British rock band Queen, releasing one-off singles such as “Welcome to the Show” and more recently “Two Fux”, and collaborating with the likes of Steve Aoki and Tritonal.
However, as the former American Idol runner-up began work on his highly anticipated fourth record, Lambert encountered a few personal and professional crises he shared with fans in a heartfelt letter prior to today’s release of new song “Feel Something”, an “emotional starting point” to his new music era.
After hiring EMPIRE as his new management team and signing with a new label, Lambert now opens up about a dark period in his career of second guessing his own artistry and having his mental health take a hit because of it. In addition, life as a bachelor had him feeling empty and numb. The new “Feel Something” touches on those struggles as the artist uses his trademark powerhouse vocals, and the support of a backing choir, to get his message across to patient fans.
“This was written about me climbing out of the low period, defying my disillusionment, owning my needs and opening my heart,” he wrote of the new song. “Between frustrations with my career and many lost connections, I felt numb and though I wanted to fall in love, I knew I wasn't ready. That's what inspired me to cry out.”
The aching, emotional ballad details Lambert’s depression, loneliness and anxiety with a simple guitar and piano as production support. The artistic move differs from the artist’s previous pop-driven efforts, emphasizing his first step toward self-care and nursing his spirit back to health. We have heard Lambert excel on soaring ballads such as “Underneath” and “There I Said It”, the new “Feel Something” fits nicely alongside.
Co-written with Benedict Cork and Josh Cumbee, the three-minute effort highlights a desperate plea for any notion of affection, with Lambert yearning for an end to the emptiness. His vocals are vulnerable on retrospective verses yet build strength whenever the subtle chorus rolls through. “I waited so long to feel like I'm worthy, find someone who could rewrite the pages I'm turning, I've grown with the pain, bathed in the lonely, all I want in this moment is someone to hold me,” he sings.
As the first taste of an upcoming full length project, “Feel Something” is not billed as the official lead single, today’s release signals a creative turn for an artist who has already reinvented himself with every album. From the glittering glam rock influence of his debut to the EDM direction of The Original High, it appears therapy for the artist comes in the form of soulful, 80s-rock creations this time around.
